People in Siliguri face major travel problems after the busy Fuleswari railway gate was permanently closed for the railway double line project from Siliguri Junction to NJP. Local residents are angry because the closure was done without keeping public movement and basic needs in mind.
Senior CPI(M) leader and former Siliguri mayor Ashok Bhattacharya held a press conference to express his strong anger against this railway decision. He demanded that authorities must quickly provide proper alternative arrangements or think about reopening the railway gate to end public suffering.
The suggested underpass for daily travel is in very bad condition with dirty water collecting inside even during light rainfall. Broken roads and deep potholes make it dangerous for school children, patients, and pedestrians to use this route every day.
Reports indicate that railways are also planning to close the important Mahabirsthan railway gate in Siliguri, which has caused more local opposition. Bhattacharya warned that if public problems are not resolved, they will launch bigger protests and hit the streets to protect public interests.
